When you hear the word “friend,” what comes to your mind?
From a biblical perspective, a true friend reflects God’s love. The Bible says:
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” — Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
John 15: Becoming a Close Friend of Jesus
In John 15, Jesus invites His followers into a close and personal friendship with Him. He describes Himself as the true vine and His followers as the branches, teaching that just as branches must remain connected to the vine to bear fruit, we must remain connected to Him to experience spiritual life and growth.
Jesus explains that being His friend means abiding in His love, listening to His words, and obeying His commands. Obedience is not about earning His love but responding to the love He has already shown us. He promises that those who remain in Him will bear lasting spiritual fruit and experience His joy.
What kind of King calls ordinary people friends?
One of the most profound statements in the chapter is,
“I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends” (John 15:15)
Jesus reveals that His friends are invited to know the Father’s heart and to share in His mission. He calls them to love one another with the same sacrificial love He demonstrated by laying down His life.
John 15 teaches that a close friend of Jesus is someone who stays connected to Him through prayer, His Word, and daily dependence; loves others as He loves; obeys Him out of love; and bears fruit that glorifies God. True friendship with Jesus is rooted in His grace and grows through an ongoing relationship with Him every day.
And Jesus gave the greatest example of friendship when He said:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13 (NIV)
A true friend is not just someone who shares your happy moments but someone who remains faithful, encourages your faith, speaks the truth in love, and walks with you through life’s challenges.
John 15:13 reminds us that:
True love is measured not by what we say, but by what we are willing to give.
Jesus demonstrated the greatest love by giving His life for us, and He calls us to reflect that same sacrificial love in our relationships with others.
Imagine this…
The One who created every star… The One who holds the universe in His hands… knows your name.
He knows your fears. He knows every tear you have ever cried. And still…
He looks at you… and says…“I call you My friend.”
How to become a close friend of Jesus
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8
James 4:8 teaches that friendship with God begins when we take the first step toward Him with sincere wholehearted devotion. God promises that when we seek Him with all our hearts, He will draw near to us. That is the foundation of becoming a close friend of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A close friend of Jesus is someone who:
- Walks with Him.
- Talks with Him.
- Spends time with Him.
“Jesus is not looking for people to fill a church building. He is looking for friends who will walk with Him every single day.”
The cross was not only the place where our sins were forgiven, it was the place where your friendship with God became possible.
No one has ever loved you like Jesus.
No one has ever sacrificed more than Jesus.

Many people know Jesus as their Saviour. Many know Him as their Lord. But today, Jesus is inviting you to know Him as your closest Friend.
To be Jesus’ close friend we should:

- Read His Word.
- Listen to His voice.

Jesus said:

True friendship with Jesus is not only emotional — it’s obedient.
Many people say they love Jesus, but Jesus teaches that love for Him is more than:
- Attending church.
- Singing worship songs.
- Wearing a cross.
- Calling ourselves Christians.
True love for Jesus is seen when we obey His Word, take up our cross daily, and faithfully follow Him.
A close friend OF JESUS:
- Loves righteousness.
- Hates sin.
- Seeks holiness.
Look at Abraham
“And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.”
Why was Abraham called God’s friend?
Not because he was flawless.
Abraham made mistakes:
- He lied about Sarah being his sister.
- He doubted God’s timing.
- He took Hagar as Sarah’s servant, leading to painful consequences.
Yet God still called him His friend because Abraham continued to trust God, repent, and obey Him.
This is encouraging for us. God is not looking for perfection; He is looking for hearts that trust Him.
Some people know about Jesus, but don’t know Jesus, some people pray only when they have problems, some people open the Bible only on Sunday.
Can we really call ourselves close friends of Jesus?
The cost of being a close friend of Jesus is:
- Surrendering your life to Him.
- Remaining in Him every day.
- Trusting and obeying His Word.
- Accepting God’s pruning and growth.
- Loving others sacrificially.
- Remaining faithful even through hardship.
Practical lessons for us today
If you want to be a close friend of Jesus Christ, you must:
- Trust Him when you don’t understand His plans.
- Believe His promises even when circumstances seem impossible.
- Obey His Word even when obedience is costly.
- Walk with Him daily, not only in times of blessing but also in times of testing.
Friendship with Jesus grows through faith, obedience, and continual fellowship.
A Close Friend of Jesus, Knows Him Personally. Christianity is not religion — it is relationship.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
Jesus is speaking about those who belong to Him. A shepherd has many sheep, but each one belongs to him personally. Likewise, every believer is precious to Jesus.
Example:
A shepherd recognises every sheep in the flock. If one goes missing, he notices immediately.
Jesus notices you. He knows your joys, your struggles, your fears, and your needs. You are never just another face in the crowd.
The Relationship Between Shepherd and Sheep
Notice the beautiful progression in this verse:
- Jesus calls.
- His sheep listen.
- Jesus knows them.
- They follow Him.
This is not merely religion; it is a living relationship built on trust, communication, and obedience.
Practical Illustration: Friendship is Built on Trust
Let me share a practical example from my own work.
As many of you know, I work as an Immigration Family Support Worker. Every week, people from many different countries come to our support clinic. Most of them have never met me before. They arrive carrying heavy burdens—questions about immigration, family difficulties, housing, healthcare, education, or simply the challenges of starting a new life in Ireland.
When they first come, they are often anxious, afraid, and unsure whether they can trust anyone.
The first thing I do is not fill out forms or give advice. I listen.
I give them time to tell their story. I show them respect, kindness, compassion, and genuine care. Little by little, a relationship begins to grow.
As they return to the clinic, trust develops. They become more open, they share their real concerns, and they begin to believe that I genuinely want to help them.
Only after that relationship of trust has been established can I effectively guide them, support them, and help them find the right solutions.
Relationships take time. Trust is not built in one conversation—it grows through consistency, faithfulness, and spending time together.
Our friendship with Jesus is very similar.
Jesus already knows us completely and loves us perfectly. The question is whether we are willing to spend time with Him. The more we pray, read His Word, worship Him, and obey Him, the closer our relationship with Him becomes.
We begin to recognise His voice, trust His guidance, and experience His peace. Friendship with Jesus does not grow by chance—it grows through daily fellowship.
The more we draw near to Jesus, the deeper our friendship with Him becomes.
Characteristics of a Close Friend of Jesus
A close friend of Jesus:
- Listens to His voice through Scripture and prayer.
- Is known personally by Him.
- Follows Him in obedience every day.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I making time every day to listen to Jesus?
- Do I obey Him when His Word challenges me?
- Am I following Jesus only when life is easy, or also when it is difficult?
- Can others see that I belong to the Good Shepherd?
Friendship with Jesus grows through daily fellowship, trust, and obedience.
John 10:27 reminds us that Jesus is not looking for distant admirers; He is calling for devoted followers. He knows each of us by name, speaks to us through His Word, and lovingly leads us through every season of life.
As His sheep, our response is simple:
- Listen to His voice.
- Trust His heart.
- Follow His leading.
When we do, we experience the joy, peace, security, and guidance that only the Good Shepherd can give.
A close friend of Jesus is the one who recognises His voice, trusts His love, and follows Him wherever He leads.
This is what Jesus desires with you and me.
The Blessings of Being Jesus’ Close Friend.
When you become a close friend of Jesus:
- You receive peace.
- You receive guidance.
- You receive protection.
- You receive joy.
- You receive eternal life.
“The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them.” Psalms 25:14
The word “confides” means to share confidential information with a trusted friend.
This beautiful verse reveals one of the greatest blessings of being a close friend of God. David reminds us that God does not remain distant from those who love and honour Him. Instead, He shares His heart, His wisdom, and His purposes with them.
What Peter’s Story Teaches
Peter’s journey shows that:
- Even devoted followers can fail.
- Genuine repentance leads to restoration.
- Jesus forgives those who return to Him.
- Past failures do not disqualify someone from serving God.
- A restored believer can become a powerful witness.
Peter’s story beautifully illustrates the truth of John 15. Although he briefly failed, he remained in Jesus’ love through repentance and was restored to a close relationship with Him. His friendship with Jesus was not based on never making mistakes but on trusting Jesus, receiving His forgiveness, and following Him faithfully afterward.
“One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.” john 13:23
What Made John a Close Friend of Jesus?
John’s example suggests several qualities:
- He stayed close to Jesus.
- He listened carefully to His teaching.
- He remained faithful even during suffering.
- He accepted responsibility when Jesus entrusted it to him.
- He reflected Jesus’ love in his own life and writings.
A Lesson for Us
John’s friendship with Jesus was not based on privilege but on relationship. He remained near Jesus, especially when others drew back. His Gospel and letters consistently point away from himself and toward Christ.
John 15 teaches that Jesus calls His followers friends when they abide in Him, keep His commands, and love one another. John’s life provides a living example of that teaching. His closeness to Jesus was expressed not only in where he stood physically—at the table and at the cross—but in a lifelong commitment to know Christ, love Him, and make Him known.

Talk to Jesus throughout the day. Friendship grows through regular conversation.
- Read and Apply God’s Word.
Don’t only read the Bible—live it. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you obey what you learn.
- Stay Connected to God’s Family.
Friendship with Jesus grows stronger as we worship, serve, and encourage one another in the church.
- Share the Love of Jesus with Others.
A close friend of Jesus reflects His love in everyday life. Show kindness, forgive freely, help those in need, and share the good news of Christ.
May we all respond to His invitation and enjoy the joy, peace, guidance, and everlasting fellowship that come from being a close friend of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“The greatest privilege in life is not wealth, success, or recognition. The greatest privilege is to walk so closely with Jesus that you know His voice, understand His heart, and enjoy His friendship every day. May we all become close friends of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

When was the last time you simply enjoyed His presence?
Not asking.
Not complaining.
Just being with Him. That is friendship.
The greatest friend is the One who first loved us.
The One who carried our sins.
The One who stretched out His hands on the Cross
The One who still says today: I have called you friends.
