Building a Legacy That Will Last

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.” 1 Corinthians 3:10-14 (NIV)

Understanding Legacy

  • Definition: Legacy is traditionally seen as something handed down from one generation to the next.
  • Secular View: Often refers to money or material possessions passed on after one’s death.
  • Christian Perspective: Goes beyond material wealth, embodying a timeless worth. A believer’s legacy is their testimony, remembered long after they have gone to the Lord. It includes:
    • The emotions people feel when they hear your name.
    • The stories they share with their children.
    • The encouragement they receive during tough times by recalling your example, all of which illustrate and glorify Jesus.

Biblical Examples of Legacy

  • Paul: Transformed by faith, wrote much of the New Testament, leaving a powerful legacy of faith and transformation.
  • David: Known as a man after God’s own heart, imparted wisdom to his son Solomon before his death.

Note: Material possessions like houses and money can be destroyed, but a legacy of character and faith endures.

Building a Lasting Legacy

  • Perseverance
    • It’s easy to give up when things get tough, but perseverance is key
  • “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9 NIV)
  • “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.” (Hebrews 10:35 NIV)
  • “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” (Hebrews 10:38 NIV)

  • Developing Strong Faith
  • Faith is not magical; it needs nurturing.
  • Examples: Abraham, who acted in faith and obedience.

  • “The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1 NIV)
  • “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17 NKJV)
  • “And without faith it is impossible to please God…” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV)

  • A Life of Prayer
  • Prayer is a powerful tool that transcends boundaries.

  • Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24 NIV)

  • A Willing Heart to Listen and Obey God
  • Success in God’s eyes is obedience.

  • “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing…” (John 5:19 NIV)

  • Doing God’s Will as the Cornerstone
  • Examples of Legacy: Brother Andrew, Billy Graham, Reinhard Bonnke.

Wrong Ways to Build a Legacy

  • Selfish Ambition: Prioritising personal interests over the kingdom.
  • Wrong Desires: Building a name for oneself rather than glorifying Jesus.

  • Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens…” (Genesis 11:4 NIV)

Conclusion

Reflect on the legacy you are building!

What legacy are you creating to inspire the next generation? Are you investing in other people?

Are you making disciples? Are you visiting people and focusing on what you will bring to heaven? Are you serving your church and the kingdom with excellence?

How do you want to be remembered by your family, friends, colleagues, and those around you during your lifetime?

The greatest legacy one can pass on to their children and grandchildren is not money or any material thing accumulated over a lifetime, but a legacy of character, faith, and spiritual children that you will bring with you to heaven.
