Prayer is the channel of communication that God established for us to connect with Him. In this study, we shall discover how to strengthen our faith through prayer and how to develop a life of intimacy with God that produces extraordinary results. We shall explore the biblical foundations of prayer, its benefits, and different practices that will help us experience God’s presence in a deeper and more transformative way.
- The Foundation of Faith
“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 NIV
This principle is fundamental: faith is the foundation of our relationship with God. But how do we develop this faith? The scripture teaches us:
“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Therefore, for God’s people to believe, faith must be taught through the Word. Similarly, our prayer life needs to be developed through constant instruction, as we see in the disciples’ request:
“Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples” Luke 11:1 NIV
The spiritual reality is clear: only those who have faith pray, only those who pray obtain faith. These two elements are inseparable and form the heart of Christian life.
- The Importance of Constant Prayer
Prayer should be constant in the Christian life: “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). However, at certain times we feel without strength to pray, which actually reflects a moment of weakness in faith. In these hours, we need to seek motivation that comes from God and the Scriptures, not from our own flesh, for:
“Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.” Romans 8:8 NIV
In a busy world with increasingly overburdened people, it has become challenging to set aside time for prayer. But God’s purpose is for us to return to His presence, and the best way to do this is through prayer.
PRACTICAL TIP: When you feel your faith weakening, do as this man who directly asked Jesus: “Help me overcome my unbelief” (Mark 9:24) or as the disciples who cried out: “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:5).
- What is Prayer?
To pray is to dialogue with God. It is the approach made by those who want to speak and hear what the Lord has to say.
Remember, however, that God is not an ordinary person. He is our Creator, the Almighty God, sovereign over the entire universe. And, despite such greatness and holiness, He decided to care about you and listen to you.
Approach the Lord acknowledging your own imperfections. He is kind, merciful and listens to prayers attentively.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you!” James 4:8a
Prayer is proof that humans can approach God! And God takes pleasure in hearing our prayers:
“Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24
- Why is Prayer Important?
Prayer is important for:
– Developing love and fellowship with God
– Deepening our knowledge of who God is
– Demonstrating our trust in the Lord
– Expressing sincere repentance
– Manifesting gratitude for what God has done
– Exercising our obedience to the Word
As in any relationship, communication and interaction are fundamental. Through the Bible, God speaks to us and, through Jesus Christ He clearly manifested His will. In response to this, we also need to speak with God, present our requests to Him, express thanks and intercede for one another.
- What are the Benefits of Prayer?
One of the great benefits of prayer is getting to know God better. But this is just one of many gifts that come to the life of one who is devoted to prayer:
Receiving divine answers: “Call to me and I will answer you.” Jeremiah 33:3
Experiencing God’s care: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 NIV
Freedom from fears: “I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4
Supernatural peace: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
Provision for our needs: “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 NIV
Spiritual power: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b
REFLECTION: Have you experienced any of these benefits in your prayer life? Which one do you need most at this moment?
- What Types of Prayer are there in the Bible?
The Bible describes at least 7 types of prayer:
Prayer of praise – Offering a sacrifice of worship to God – “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.” Hebrews 13:15
Prayer of gratitude – Expressing thankfulness for all that God does – “Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Ephesians 5:20
Prayer of confession – Acknowledging our sins and seeking forgiveness – “I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.” Psalm 38:18
Prayer of intercession – Praying for the needs of others – “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you.” 1 Samuel 12:23a
Prayer of petition – Asking for our own needs – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
Prayer of supplication – Crying out to God for help in difficult times – “I cry out to God; I cry out to God that he may hear me.” Psalm 77:1
Prayer of lament – Expressing our pain and anguish – “I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble.” Psalm 142:2
- If God Already Knows Everything, Why Do We Need to Pray?
Yes, God knows all things, even before we speak them. Still, He wants us to pray about everything in life.
Praying is not simply making something known to God, but it’s about revealing our obedience and dependence on the Lord.
Prayer makes us aware of our need for God and confidence that He can respond, according to His will. When we cry out in faith, many resources we need become accessible through the grace of Jesus Christ. Prayer moves us closer to God.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.” 1 Timothy 2:1
- How Long Should I Pray?
Jesus questions us: “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” suggesting that an hour is a reasonable time for prayer.
Paul also instructs us: “Pray continually.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
In the Bible we find many examples of people, like Jesus, Daniel, Moses and Joshua who used to pray frequently. Certainly, this practice made all the difference in their lives. Thus, we learn that prayer should be constant in the Christian’s life.
If you don’t have a daily prayer time, I want to challenge you to start with 10-15 minutes of prayer every morning. You will notice how your life will change.
- How Should We Pray?
The Bible teaches us that our prayers should be:
– Directed to God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). We should not pray to angels, nor pray before images, nor to saints.
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God” Exodus 20:4-5 NIV
– Made in the name of Jesus Christ. He is our mediator. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:14, 1 Timothy 2:5
– Made with faith, believing that God exists and rewards those who seek Him. “Without faith it is impossible to please God…” Hebrews 11:6
– For the right reasons, with an upright heart, without ulterior motives. “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” James 4:3
– Made with humility and love, pouring out your heart before God. “Pour out your hearts to him.” Psalm 62:8
– Made individually in secret (Matthew 6:6) or in public, or in a group in the community (Matthew 18:19)
Following Jesus’ model:
- A) Glorifying God, for growth of His Kingdom and for His will to be done
- B) Bread (basic needs)
- C) Forgiveness and Protection (Matthew 6:5-15)
- Are There Conditions for Victory in Prayer?
Yes. To succeed in prayer, one must be aware of some requirements that the Bible establishes:
Pray according to God’s will – “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John 5:14-15
With contrition and humility – “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
With sincerity – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
With faith – “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
With righteousness – “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16
With obedience – “And receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.” 1 John 3:22
Abide in Jesus, keeping His Words – “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7)
Effective prayer is that which is made according to God’s will, and will be answered in His time and in His way.
- What About Unanswered Prayers?
There are many possibilities and reasons why we may not receive answers to prayer:
Matter of timing – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
Hidden sins – “If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.” Psalms 66:1
Contempt for God’s Word – “If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.” Proverbs 28:9 NIV
Inconsistency – “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.” James 1:6-7
Marital problems – “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” 1 Peter 3:7
Or, simply, what we ask for in prayer may not be part of God’s plans.
In the Bible we see two important examples of prayer requests that were not granted because they were not aligned with God’s purpose:
Jesus in Gethsemane – prayed 3 times asking the Father that if possible the cup would be taken from him, but that His will be done above all (Matthew 26:39-44)
Paul and the thorn in the flesh – the apostle Paul also prayed 3 times asking for this affliction to be removed, which may have been a physical infirmity or some other undescribed problem, but his request was not granted (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)
Similarly, we too may not see the answers to some prayers, but still know that God’s will is always best, and His grace is sufficient to help us in difficulties.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John 5:14
