Using your 5 Senses to God’s Glory

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.” Psalm 139:13-18

God is our Creator! He knit us in our mother’s womb. We are wonderfully made. All of God’s works are wonderful, and You are one of them. You’re a beautiful creation of God. Did you know that?

God has a unique and wonderful purpose just for you. When God made you, He gave you different senses as a gift.

God created us with five basic senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. He intricately designed each sense organ to transmit information to our brain. Our five senses help us understand and notice what is happening in our world.

Pay attention: Our senses are gifts from our God the Creator, and we have to use them in a good way.

Today we will talk about: Using your 5 Senses to God’s glory

First of all we have to know our senses…They are:

1 Sight: Eyes

See things to the glory of God!

A rainbow, the sunset, the ocean . . . remember that God is the Creator of all these things and give Him thanks.
“Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” Psalm 66:5

2 Smell: Nose

Smell things to the glory of God!

Sweet-smelling flowers, freshly baked bread, a gentle rain. Give praise to God for the sense of smell!

“and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2

3 Touch: Hands

Touch others to the glory of God!

A gentle hug or a friendly pat shows your love.

“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” Matthew 22:39

4 Taste: Tongue

Eat things to the glory of God!

There are so much wonderful food and great flavours to thank God for.

“That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 3:13

5 Hearing: Ears

Listen to the glory of God!

Birds, beautiful music, your friend’s laugh . . . thank you, God, for the special gift of hearing.

“As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”” Hebrews 3:15

Let’s pray: Father, today we wanna hear your voice, taste more of your presence, touch your heart, smell your sweet perfume and see your glory. Speak to us, teach us and help us to get revelation from your word, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If we look to the Bible, we can find how to use our senses to God’s glory.

So now, we can learn how to use our senses in a good way.

1 – Sight / Eyes

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23

How is your vision? I’m not talking about your natural vision. I’m asking you about your spiritual vision!

When you are facing troubles, what can you see? What do you hope for?

In the midst of struggles, we have to climb up the Spiritual Mountain and look above the situation and see what we can learn from it, what we can use to strength our lives.

Look at a perfect example of looking at something the right way:

“Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.” Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:13-17

How is your vision?

Are you like the servant in the verse 15 (Oh no, What shall we do?) What do you usually see? Are you just seeing trouble, disease, a powerful army against you?

Or are you like Elisha in verse 16? (Don’t be afraid, those who are with us are more than those who are with them).

Take care of what you see on the internet, on Tv, on YouTube, on books… These things can destroy your light! If what you are seeing is not light, you’re bringing darkness into your soul. Remember what Jesus said: The eyes are the lamp of the body.

Perhaps you don’t know but sometimes you can remember bad things that you saw many years ago. What you see goes to your mind and to your heart. Get some light into your body, get more of Jesus into your heart! Fix your eyes on Jesus.

“fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:2

 2 Smell / Nose

“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” 2 Corinthians 2:15

What kind of smell are you exhaling around?

Again, I’m talking in a spiritual way.

When you are with your family, do you have a good smell to them? Like, you have a good testimony?

As Jesus said: ““Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.” Matthew 23:27

It’s a warning against hypocrisy. Are you exhaling life? Or is something wrong inside you? Be careful! You can start to exhale a bad smell because of what is inside you.

We are the sweet fragrance of Christ which goes up to God.

We need to breathe life, and exhale Jesus to other people.

3 Touch / Hands

“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.” Psalm 24:3-4

God gave us hands to use them in a Holy way. God is holy, and we have to be holy with our life and also with our hands.

Who may stand in his holy place? There is a condition: The one who has clean hands and a pure heart.

God will put you in situations to check if your hands are clean. And how will it happen?

  • Your hands can be used to bless people. Put your hand into your pocket and give money or food away. You can use you hands to helps those in need.
  • Your hands can be used to bless the church.

The church needs a new building, new stuff. Give your tithes and offerings and honour God.

  • Your hands can be used to show love.

Hug your children, wife, husband. Show them love.

Think about it: Let your hands be so busy holding onto blessings that you don’t have the room to hold onto grudges.

Look at this good example of how to use your hands:

“because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.” Luke 8:42-44

From now. Lift up your hands to heaven and praise Jesus, as that woman did, touch Jesus with your faith. Believe and touch Him. Believe and do it, believe and act in your life. Show your faith by touching Jesus, touching people’s lives, blessing God’s church.

We are his hands and his feet. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. So, show his love to others!

4 Taste / Tongue

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matthew 5:13

How is your taste? You’re the salt of the earth.

What is the use of salt?

Salt had two purposes in the Middle East of the first century. The first was adding flavour to food. But the second and most important was for keeping food. Because of the lack of refrigeration, salt was used to preserve food, especially meat, which would quickly spoil in the hot desert environment. Believers of Christ are then salt of the world, we have to preserve our family and keep them from dying in their sins, we are the salt of the world to preserve our lives until the day of the Lord. We can preserve ourselves by being in Jesus, taking care of our tongue.

Look what the bible says:

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” James 3:9-12

Are you producing life or death with your tongue? Are you praising Jesus or cursing with your tongue?

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? No, of course not. In the same way, we have to decide to speak life, blessings to the others, we have to decide to praise Jesus with our tongue. We have to be a good taste to the world.

We should decide to taste more of God and to be a good taste to the world.

The book of Psalms says:

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8

 5 Hearing / Ears

We’re gonna finish with this beautiful story of the blind man from Jericho.

“As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” Luke 18:35-37)

First, that blind man heard about Jesus. When he heard, he decided to get an encounter with the Savior.

He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  Luke 18:38

He decided to use his tongue to cry out to Jesus. He decided to use his tongue to change his life!

Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Luke 18:39

Brothers and sisters, don’t listen the voice of fear! Don’t hear the negatives thoughts, the voice of trouble! Use your ears to listen Jesus voice! Use your ears to fill your spirit with good things from God!

Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.” Luke 18:40-43

Praised be to Jesus’ name! The blind man heard about Jesus and decided to get a real encounter with Jesus and to be transformed!

He heard Jesus calling him. He used his tongue to ask to be able to see! The first sight that man ever saw was Jesus! Hallelujah! Can you imagine it? He saw Jesus for the first time and decided to follow Jesus.

That man touched Jesus with his faith, he tasted Jesus’ grace, and He began to be a good fragrance of Christ to the world.

What about you? From now on You can choose to use your 5 senses to God’s glory.

Put your eyes on Jesus, be a good smell to the word, be Jesus’ hands and Jesus’ feet, speak life and hear God’s voice. Decide to follow Jesus with all your life, mind and strength.
