MESSAGE 1: THE POWER THAT TRANSFORMS LIVES
Key Scripture:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NKJV
INTRODUCTION:
This week, during my time alone with the Lord, I asked, “Holy Spirit, what do You want to say to Your Church in these coming days?” As soon as I asked, I sensed a gentle but powerful impression in my heart: “Speak about Me.”
That is exactly what we are going to do over the next few weeks. We are not simply going to talk about events that happened two thousand years ago. We are going to talk about a Person.
Sadly, the Holy Spirit is often the most ignored Person of the Trinity in both traditional and modern churches. He is one of the most misunderstood Persons in the Bible and, at the same time, the One we desperately need in these days of darkness and confusion.
Without Him, the church becomes just another organisation. But with Him, the church becomes a living, powerful, and unstoppable force for God.
THE GREATEST DISCOVERY OF MY JOURNEY
During the early years of my Christian life, I lived in a kind of spiritual orphanhood. I knew God as the Almighty Father, the Creator of Heaven and Earth. I knew Jesus as the Saviour who died on the cross and rose again. But the Holy Spirit was a mystery to me.
I saw Him as a force, a power, or some kind of spiritual energy that God would occasionally send to help Christians or make a church service feel special.
What I did not understand was this simple but life-changing truth: the Holy Spirit is God. He is not a thing; He is a Person. He is not a power for us to use; He is a Person who wants to walk with us. He speaks, He feels, He guides, and above all, He desires a close relationship with us.
As A.W. Tozer said:
“The Holy Spirit is not an influence you must get; He is a Person who must get you.”
MY TESTIMONY: THE CHAINS OF RELIGION
I want to open my heart and be honest with you. For a long time, I was a defeated Christian. I had the label, but not the reality. I went to church, carried my Bible, and knew the Christian language, but my private life was full of struggles.
I was trapped in repeated sins and kept losing the same battles. Pornography had a strong hold on my life, and I often lived according to the flesh instead of the Spirit.
I read the Bible, but I did not understand it. The words seemed lifeless to me. Even in my giving, I failed. I often withheld my tithes and offerings because I was controlled by fear and a poverty mindset.
I knew religion, but I did not know the power of God. I spoke about the Bible and about casting out demons, but I had no authority. I talked about Jesus, but people were not coming to Christ. I spoke about love, but I did not truly enjoy being with people.
I had a form of godliness, but I lacked its power.
Eventually, I reached a point where I could no longer live like that. As I read the Scriptures and listened to my pastors and leaders, I realised that what I needed was not more knowledge. I needed the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit in my life.
So I began to cry out to God from the depths of my heart:
“My life is full of defeat. I need the baptism of the Holy Spirit! Baptise me with Your power, just as You did with Your apostles!”
And that became my prayer for many months.
THE DAY HEAVEN TOUCHED EARTH
I will never forget that day. It is written not only in my memory but also in my heart: Tuesday, 19th February 1985, at about two o’clock in the morning.
The Holy Spirit came upon me in a way that words can hardly describe. I was baptised in the Holy Spirit.
It was more than a feeling; it was an encounter with the presence and glory of God. The presence of the Lord filled that place in such a powerful way that I could hardly stand. My body trembled as the power and presence of God overwhelmed me. Everything around me seemed radiant with light, I began to speak in other tongues for the first time—a language my mind did not understand, but through which my spirit was speaking directly to God.
But the greatest experience was not speaking in tongues. It was meeting the Person of the Holy Spirit.
That morning, I moved from knowing about Him to truly knowing Him. What happened that night changed the course of my life forever.
THE BIBLICAL PATTERN: THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE DISCIPLES
After this experience, as I studied the Scriptures, I realised that my story was not unique. It was God’s pattern.
Look at the disciples of Jesus. They had the greatest Bible school in history. For three years they were taught by Jesus Himself. They witnessed miracles, saw the dead raised, and watched Jesus calm the storm with a word. Yet, despite all of this, they were still weak and unstable men.
Before Pentecost, Peter denied Jesus because of fear. The disciples ran away and hid when pressure came. Thomas doubted the resurrection. They had knowledge, but they lacked transformation.
Jesus knew this. That is why, before ascending to heaven, He gave them a clear command.
Acts 1:4 (NIV):
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised…”
Then He said in Acts 1:8 (NIV):
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”
In other words, Jesus was saying:
“Don’t rush out to preach yet. Wait for the promise. Wait for the Holy Spirit.”
“You know Me. You have seen the miracles. You have heard My teaching. But you are not yet ready to reach the world. You need the power of the Holy Spirit.”
THE TURNING POINT
Acts chapter 2 records the moment that changed not only the disciples, but the course of history. On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples were gathered together when they were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:4 (NIV) says: “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
The Bible tells us that two things happened: they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other tongues.
This is exactly what the Church needs today. Many believers have biblical knowledge, but little of the power of the Holy Spirit. As a result, much preaching lacks authority and produces little lasting fruit.
When the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues, everything changed. The fearful Peter was gone, and a bold Apostle Peter emerged. The man who trembled before a servant girl now stood before thousands and preached with authority and conviction. His message pierced their hearts, and three thousand people were saved in a single day.
What changed?
Peter did not attend a leadership seminar. He did not improve his communication skills. He did not develop a better strategy.
The Holy Spirit transformed him.
The secret of the Early Church was not better methods. It was complete dependence on and submission to the Person of the Holy Spirit.
WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
We need to correct a common misunderstanding: the Holy Spirit is not some kind of spiritual force or heavenly energy. He is God. He is a Person.
The Bible gives us clear evidence of His personality.
He Has Feelings
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
(Ephesians 4:30, NIV)
A force cannot be grieved. Only a person can feel sorrow.
He Thinks and He Guides
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
(John 16:13, NIV)
An energy cannot guide anyone. Only someone who knows the way can lead others.
He Speaks and Makes Decisions
“While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’”
(Acts 13:2, NIV)
A force does not speak. A force does not call people. A force does not send missionaries.
Only a Person can do that.
The Holy Spirit is not an influence from God. He is God Himself, living and working among His people.
ILLUSTRATION: THE CAR AND THE FUEL
Imagine a man trying to push a luxury car up a steep hill. He uses all his strength. Sweat runs down his face. His muscles ache with exhaustion. Yet the car barely moves.
He is trying to make the car work by his own effort.
Many Christians live exactly like that. They try to live the Christian life in their own strength. They try to overcome sin through willpower alone. They try to serve God out of duty rather than relationship. As a result, they become tired, frustrated, and spiritually dry.
Then someone comes along, fills the tank with fuel, and starts the engine. Suddenly, the car moves with ease and does exactly what it was designed to do.
The Holy Spirit is the divine fuel of the Christian life. He is the power God gives us to live, grow, serve, and fulfil our calling.
Without Him, we struggle. With Him, we move forward in the strength of God.
THE GREAT TRUTH: TRANSFORMATION FROM THE INSIDE OUT
The greatest miracle I experienced in 1985 was not speaking in tongues. It was the transformation of my life.
The Holy Spirit did not come simply to give me a spiritual experience. He came to change me from the inside out. He changed my desires. Things I once loved, I began to hate. Things I once ignored, such as holiness and intimacy with God, became the deepest desires of my heart.
He changed my passion for God. He changed the way I treated people. He changed the direction of my life and my eternal destiny.
That is what the Holy Spirit does. He does not simply improve a person; He transforms a person.
As Charles Spurgeon said:
“Without the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind, or branches without sap.”
Without the Holy Spirit, Christianity becomes a struggle. With the Holy Spirit, it becomes a life of transformation.
CONCLUSION AND APPEAL
Perhaps you are exactly where I was before that life-changing encounter.
You attend church. You read your Bible. You try to be a good Christian. Yet you find yourself trapped in the same struggles. You feel empty, frustrated, and your Christian life seems to lack power and victory.
The answer is not to try harder. The answer is to know the Holy Spirit.
Christianity without the Holy Spirit becomes a burden. It becomes a religion of effort and frustration. But when the Holy Spirit takes His rightful place in our lives, everything changes. The Christian life becomes a supernatural journey with God.
Today, I do not simply want to teach you about the Holy Spirit.
I want to introduce you to Him.
He is here.
He knows your struggles.
He knows your fears.
He knows your battles.
And He wants to walk with you every day of your life.
Are you willing to say:
“Holy Spirit, I am tired of trying to do this on my own. I don’t want religion without relationship. I don’t want information without transformation. I want to know You.”
The same Holy Spirit who transformed Peter…
The same Holy Spirit who met me in February 1985…
Is here today.
And He is ready to transform your life as well.
Cry out to God and ask Him to baptise you afresh with Power from on High. Ask His forgiveness for ignoring the Holy Spirit, and He will visit you, fill you, and lead you into a victorious Christian life.
God bless you,
